Effects Of Humiliation: Wrestler's Dreads Cut Off

There is nothing I am more attached to in life than my hair. It’s long, it’s thick, it’s curly, it completes my style and it is 100% me. It’s been with me for years. The longer it gets, the closer I am to it. So, when I heard about the young wrestler who was forced to have his dreadlocks cut off immediately before a match, I felt like I could faint.

Being that I see it as horrifying, I could only wonder: Just how traumatic is the hair cutting punishment to the brain? Granted, the young man didn’t do anything wrong to be punished but, according to the referee his hair didn't meet proper match "guidelines" falling lower than his eyebrows and below shirt collar level.

Overall, the true pain endured in this situation really was humiliation. The young man had a crowd. He was part of a wrestling match with people sitting, watching in the bleachers. He was then told he would have to cut off his dreads or forfeit for refusal. (Ordered by Alan Mahoney, who had been in trouble before “after being accused of using a racial slur against a black referee") Passionate about his game, he was rewarded with the intimate act of having his hair cut off in front of a crowd of people and now all over the internet.

When people are humiliated or embarrassed in front of the public it can conjour deep feelings of hurt, rage, or even suicidal behavior. Humiliation, being a social emotion, can lead someone (especially a teenager) to fall into a deep depression since emotional vulnerability will only result in a lack of resilience. Let's not forget an introduction to anxiety due to a new lack of trust.

Now, for argument’s sake, one could say they respect such deep sportsmanship. Perhaps, him allowing his hair to be cut is a sign that young people aren’t cowardly as others might want us to think but, instead honorable and will sacrifice something close for what they love. It’s also the way society likes to see a young man behave.

But, nonetheless, it’s still alarming and harmful. According to Wikipedia " Humiliated individuals could be provoked and crave for revenge,.........hopeless and helpless, creating suicidal thoughts if justice is not met...........Feelings of humiliation can produce "humiliated fury which, when turned inward can result in apathy and depression, and when turned outward can give rise to paranoia, sadistic behavior and fantasies of revenge......" Obviously, it does no good to humiliate anyone, especially in front of an audience.

As for the true intention, I'm conflicted as I don't know if Alan Mahoney was acting off racist ways or being stern about the sport. He could have been "disgusted" and "offended' by the traditional hairstyle and wanted to show this teen who was boss.........or he could have wanted to teach the whole team a lesson when it comes to being serious about your craft. My opinion still stands in it should have never been done in the first place. He should not have ordered for his hair to be cut off and embarrassed in front of everyone watching.

Humiliation results in many negative outcomes of the brain. It effects emotions which ultimately effects the person's actions. When the victim is innocent, it's consequences are that much worse. How do you feel about the situation? Do you feel he was humiliated? Taught a lesson? Was this racist?
