In short, it is a dangerous person with a grandiose sense of self. With the use of reckless behavior, the narcissist will sabotage their victim through triangulation, isolation, scape goating, and so forth. They lack empathy and need admiration at all times since they believe they need special treatment.
Some narcissists suffer from NPD - Narcissistic Personality Disorder. A more extreme form of Narcissism that is so destructive, it is ultimately diagnosed. This personality is often compared to Machiavellianism and Psychopathy.
Anyone can be a victim of this abuse. Many times it is often a child, family member, friend, significant other, coworker or someone close to the Narcissist as the closer they become, the more they learn how to manipulation this person.
